Specific needs
- A correct thermal gradient
- Hiding places and security (a well-sealed vivarium)
- Humidity suited to the species
Feeding
- Appropriately sized prey, at the right frequency
- Respecting the normal fasting periods for the species
- Clean water available at all times
Habitat & environment
- A basking spot and a cool zone
- Hiding places at both ends, with a suitable substrate
- A perfectly secure vivarium
Prevention
- Check temperature and humidity
- Keep an eye on shedding, skin and appetite
- A veterinary opinion if anything seems wrong
Vaccination
There is no vaccination for snakes. Prevention rests on a correct vivarium and a correct diet.
Warning signs — see a vet if you notice:
- Incomplete sheds, retained eye caps (spectacles)
- An inflamed mouth, wheezing
- An unusually long refusal to eat, weight loss
When to see a vet?
- See the vet in case of breathing difficulty, mouth lesions or persistent shedding problems
- Check the environment first and foremost
