🐔 Basse-cour

Hen

The garden hen is an endearing backyard bird, but one that is prone to parasites and to dietary mistakes. Regular check-ups safeguard her health and welfare.

HomeSpecies we treatHen

Specific needs

  • A dry, well-ventilated henhouse that is secure against predators
  • An outdoor run with shaded areas and a dust bath
  • Life in a group — never a hen on her own

Feeding

  • A complete feed for laying hens, plus grit (limestone for calcium)
  • Clean water at all times, changed every day
  • Kitchen scraps only in strict moderation (never salted or mouldy)

Habitat & environment

  • Clean perches and nest boxes
  • Dry bedding, cleaned out regularly
  • Protection from damp, cold and heat

Prevention

  • Watch for external parasites (red mite) and internal ones (worms)
  • Strict henhouse hygiene
  • Daily observation of general condition and of laying

Vaccination

Depending on where the birds come from and the situation, some vaccinations are available (for example against Marek's disease in chicks). Discuss this with your vet, and comply with the official measures against avian influenza (bird flu).

Warning signs — see a vet if you notice:
  • Listlessness, fluffed-up feathers, keeping apart from the others
  • An unexplained halt in laying, diarrhoea
  • Breathing difficulties, lameness

When to see a vet?

  • Promptly if she is listless or has breathing or digestive problems
  • If you suspect parasites or an injury

At the AuFuret practice

  • Health examinations and husbandry advice
  • Parasite management
  • Treatment and minor surgery as needed

Dr Danielle Frei Perrin regularly appears as a veterinary expert on Swiss public broadcasting (RTS) and in leading French-speaking Swiss media.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep just one hen?
No: hens are social birds, and you need at least two or three together for their well-being.
Are there rules I need to follow?
Yes: keeping poultry is subject to animal-health rules (avian influenza in particular), so check with your cantonal authorities.
