Parrot

Parrots (the African grey, Amazons, macaws and so on) are intelligent, highly social and long-lived. They need stimulation, a balanced diet and veterinary care.

  • Daily mental stimulation and interaction
  • A large cage or aviary, plus time out of the cage
  • Enough sleep (10–12 hours) in a quiet spot

  • Good-quality pellets plus fresh vegetables and fruit, and only a few oily seeds
  • Fresh, clean water daily
  • Avoid avocado, chocolate, caffeine and salt (all toxic)

  • Away from the kitchen (toxic fumes)

Warning signs — see a vet if you notice:

Frequently asked questions

How long does a parrot live?
Depending on the species, from 20 to 60 years or more: it is a very long-term commitment.
My parrot is pulling out its feathers — why?
Feather plucking has many causes (boredom, stress, illness), so a consultation is needed.
