Specific needs
- Interaction and stimulation (social species)
- Suitable lighting and a proper day/night rhythm
- Flight and exercise
Feeding
- A varied, balanced diet (not seeds alone)
- Suitable vegetables and fruit, depending on the species
- Fresh, clean water
Habitat & environment
- A spacious cage or aviary with a variety of perches
- Away from draughts and fumes (which are toxic!)
- Toys and enrichment
Prevention
- Daily observation (plumage, droppings, appetite)
- Avoid toxic fumes (non-stick cookware, aerosols)
- Regular veterinary check-ups
Vaccination
There is no routine vaccination for most pet birds. Prevention relies on diet, environment and observation.
Warning signs — see a vet if you notice:
- Fluffed-up feathers, a bird sitting at the bottom of the cage
- Laboured breathing, tail bobbing
- A change in droppings, loss of appetite
When to see a vet?
- A visibly listless bird is often already very unwell: see the vet quickly
- Seek prompt advice at any sign of breathing difficulty
