Birds

Parrots, parakeets and other pet birds have very specific social and dietary needs. They hide illness well, so careful observation is essential.

HomeSpecies we treatBirds

Specific needs

  • Interaction and stimulation (social species)
  • Suitable lighting and a proper day/night rhythm
  • Flight and exercise

Feeding

  • A varied, balanced diet (not seeds alone)
  • Suitable vegetables and fruit, depending on the species
  • Fresh, clean water

Habitat & environment

  • A spacious cage or aviary with a variety of perches
  • Away from draughts and fumes (which are toxic!)
  • Toys and enrichment

Prevention

  • Daily observation (plumage, droppings, appetite)
  • Avoid toxic fumes (non-stick cookware, aerosols)
  • Regular veterinary check-ups

Vaccination

There is no routine vaccination for most pet birds. Prevention relies on diet, environment and observation.

Warning signs — see a vet if you notice:
  • Fluffed-up feathers, a bird sitting at the bottom of the cage
  • Laboured breathing, tail bobbing
  • A change in droppings, loss of appetite

When to see a vet?

  • A visibly listless bird is often already very unwell: see the vet quickly
  • Seek prompt advice at any sign of breathing difficulty
