Hamster

A small, nocturnal and solitary rodent, the hamster has a short life expectancy. A suitable home and careful observation are essential.

HomeSpecies we treatHamster

Specific needs

  • Living alone (most species)
  • Nocturnal activity (a silent wheel)
  • Peace and quiet during the day

Feeding

  • A suitable seed mix plus a little fresh food
  • Clean water at all times
  • Avoid too many sugary treats

Habitat & environment

  • A spacious cage with bedding deep enough to burrow in
  • A correctly sized wheel and hiding places
  • Away from draughts and heat

Prevention

  • Daily observation (weight, coat, behaviour)
  • Regular cleaning of the cage
  • A veterinary opinion if anything seems wrong

Vaccination

There is no routine vaccination for hamsters. Prevention comes down to housing, diet and observation.

Warning signs — see a vet if you notice:
  • Abscesses, lumps under the skin
  • Hair loss, diarrhoea
  • Lethargy, weight loss

When to see a vet?

  • See the vet in case of a lump, a wound or listlessness
  • Don’t wait: their fast metabolism leaves little margin

It’s worth a veterinary opinion (abscess, tumour…): please book an appointment.
What size of cage?
As large as possible, with bedding to burrow in and a suitable wheel.
