Specific needs

  • Plenty of activity and interaction
  • Long spells of sleep between bouts of play
  • A secure environment (they squeeze in everywhere)

Feeding

  • A diet rich in animal protein, formulated for ferrets
  • Avoid sugars and plant-based foods
  • Fresh water at all times

Habitat & environment

  • A spacious cage plus daily supervised time out
  • A hammock and hiding places
  • Cool temperatures (they are sensitive to heat)

Prevention

  • Regular veterinary check-ups
  • Suitable parasite treatments
  • Monitoring of weight and coat

Vaccination

Vaccination is recommended against canine distemper (often fatal in ferrets) and rabies depending on travel. The protocol is set during the consultation.

Warning signs — see a vet if you notice:
  • Symmetrical hair loss, a swollen belly
  • Weakness, weight loss
  • Fainting episodes, hypoglycaemia (weakness in the hind legs)

When to see a vet?

  • See the vet promptly in case of weakness, collapse or weight loss
  • Regular check-ups are advised, as certain diseases are common

Frequently asked questions

Does a ferret need vaccinations?
Yes, in particular against canine distemper, which is often fatal. The protocol is tailored during the consultation.
Why is my ferret losing its fur?
Hair loss can be hormonal or linked to a disease that is common in ferrets: a check-up is advised.
Do ferrets cope with heat?
Not well: they are prone to heatstroke. Keep them cool in summer.
