Guinea pig

The guinea pig (or cavy) is a sociable herbivore. One key feature: it cannot make its own vitamin C, which must be supplied through its diet.

Frequently asked questions

Why is vitamin C so important?
Guinea pigs can’t make it themselves: a deficiency causes serious health problems. It must be provided every day.
Can I keep a single guinea pig?
No: in Switzerland it is illegal to keep a guinea pig on its own. They are highly sociable animals that need the company of at least one companion of their own kind.
My guinea pig is eating less — should I be worried?
Yes: a drop in appetite is a reason to see the vet without delay.
