🐤 Oiseaux

Canary

The canary is a hardy songbird, but one that hides illness well. A suitable cage and a good diet keep it in fine form.

HomeSpecies we treatCanary

Specific needs

  • A cage that is wide rather than tall (canaries fly horizontally), with a variety of perches
  • Natural light and a calm environment
  • The chance to bathe regularly

Feeding

  • A canary seed mix, plus fresh greens
  • Fresh, clean water daily
  • Supplements (cuttlebone, vitamins) as needed

Habitat & environment

  • A cage kept away from draughts and smoke
  • Regular cleaning of the feeders and the cage floor
  • A steady temperature, with no sudden changes

Prevention

  • Keeping an eye on weight and plumage
  • Cage hygiene
  • Quarantining new birds

Vaccination

There is no routine vaccination; prevention rests on hygiene and observation. Something to discuss at a consultation.

Warning signs — see a vet if you notice:
  • Fluffed-up feathers, the bird sitting hunched at the bottom of the cage
  • Breathing difficulties, tail bobbing
  • Stopping singing alongside other signs, diarrhoea

When to see a vet?

  • At the very first signs (birds mask their illnesses)
  • As an emergency if breathing is laboured

At the AuFuret practice

Frequently asked questions

Why has my canary stopped singing?
Moulting, stress, illness or a lack of light: if it lasts or comes with other signs, see the vet.
A tall cage or a wide one?
Wide: canaries fly horizontally, so length matters more than height.
