The Society of Swiss Veterinarians (the Swiss veterinary association), together with other bodies, is running a nationwide information campaign across Switzerland from May 2009 to champion the vaccination of dogs, cats and horses.
A certain vaccination threshold (around 70%) of a population must indeed be reached before an infectious disease can realistically be controlled — one that can be prevented effectively with a single injection.
Vaccination protocols vary with the disease being vaccinated against, the animal species, the individual animal's way of life and the regulations. Some diseases need a booster every year, or even every 6 months; others need renewing only every 3 years, for example. Your vet can give each patient tailored advice.
